Order Now

In addition to demonstrating her talent as a singing, songwriting, guitar slinging solo artist, Caren Armstrong’s new, self-produced CD “Everything” shows off her skills as a collaborator. The mercurial songbird has taken her finely honed solo chops to a whole new level, surrounding herself with a vibrant sonic palette that includes Lloyd Maine’s slinky dobro, Darol Anger’s virtuosic fiddle, Joe Craven’s exotic percussion, Robert Powell’s soaring pedal steel and electric guitar/sitar, as well as Shirley Muramoto’s masterful koto. Mix in the sizzling guitar of Glenn Houston and the grooving rhythm section that is Peter Tucker on drums, and Chris Kee on bass and you have one sweet and spicy cup o’ mojo.

That Is Why You Like Me

Lyrics & Music by Caren Armstrong, Copyright © 2007

Well I’m thin skinned
Thick headed
Stiff necked
But go on and admit it
That is why you like me

You got that sharp eye and that
Quick tongue
Feistier than the Devil’s own son and
That is why you like me
That is why you like me

Don’t try to figure it out
It’s just meant to be
So if I say the wrong thing

At the right time
Well I’m the kinda woman that’s
Got to speak her mind

And that is why
That is why
That is why you like me
That is why you like me.

HeartStrings

Lyrics & Music by Caren Armstrong, Copyright © 2007

Well we may never know why we’re alive
But Buddha said that understanding is the booby-prize
So don’t question how it’s done
Just let every song be sung

On your HeartStrings
On your HeartStrings
On your HeartStrings

When the road is long and home is very far
I think about the ones I love and wish upon a star
Doesn’t matter what life brings
I am carried on the wings
Of your HeartStrings

On your HeartStrings
On your HeartStrings

Now I look out upon your shining faces
And I feel the love we make together in this righteous place
It’s a song that’s sweet and fine
Played on the instrument of time
On your HeartStrings
On your HeartStrings

On your HeartStrings

Well we may never know why we’re alive
But Buddha said that understanding is the booby-prize
Now life only asks one thing
That you join with me and sing
On your HeartStrings
On your HeartStrings
On your HeartStrings

Ride

Lyrics & Music by Caren Armstrong, Copyright © 2007

The Pontiac was green and white
Built in 1955

His mama threw that car in overdrive
Flew off into the Texas night
In the back seat two young children
Listened to hank Williams singing
The midnight train is whining low
I’m so lonesome I could cry
That’s where he got the taste to
Ride…
Ride…

Then it was he and Sonny Barger
Back when Harleys were for real folks
Before the fucking yuppies came and
Turned it all into a joke
Now he rides his Hyabusa
And though his helmet’s gotten looser
That don’t stop him blasting
That rice rocket til it fries

Blowing down the road at One Nine Five
His mama must look down with pride
See him Ride…

Down at the garden of Allah
On a Sunday afternoon
Brawling in the aisles with roller derby queen
“Tuffy” Brasuhn

Still you can’t help but to love him

Or at least what there is left of him
If it was worth doing once by god
You better bet he did it twice
And though he’s hardly just begun yet
When he fades into that final sunset
I hope they open them pearly gates to heaven
Good and wide
He’s gonna need some room to ride
Ride…

Origami

Lyrics & Music by Caren Armstrong, Copyright © 2007

If you take a paper
Smooth and clean

You can fold it into any kind of dream
Any shape’s a possibility
Origami

Transformation
Is never far
Find a new perspective
Just by being where you are
On the wings of one thousand cranes

Let your dreams fly free
Origami

And with a fold or two
Light up the sky with paper moon
Pull it down and crimp it round
A paper rose will bloom
And that paper rose
Could cause a heart to beat

Origami

If you find a woman
Free and strong
Fold her with a patient hand
Before too long
You will see love increase
Geometrically

Follow You Down

Lyrics & Music by Caren Armstrong, Copyright © 2007

You don’t have to say you love me
You don’t have to speak at all

I can see your load is heavy
At any moment you could fall
Let me carry those secrets
Though they weigh a thousand pounds
Lean on me
I Will Follow You Down

Blame it on your mama
Blame it on your pa

You’re just a victim of the drama
There should really be a law
Go ahead and have another
Baby no one’s keeping count
And if you get too high
I Will Follow You Down

I will follow you down
I will follow you down

With tangled promises we’re bound
I will follow you down

Just like Samson and Delilah
Scarlet and Rhett
Anthony and Cleopatra
Romeo and Juliet
We will walk together/let me walk beside you
Up the streets of tragic town

Oh darling
I Will Follow You Down

I will follow you down
I will follow you down
Count on me to stick around
Your wistful little clown
I will follow you down
I will follow you down

You look so handsome in that thorny crown
I will follow you down
I will follow you down
I’ll be your wistful little clown
Your faithful little hound
Follow you…
Follow you down
I will follow you
I will follow you
I will follow you…DOWN

All the Help

Lyrics & Music by Caren Armstrong, Copyright © 2007

Well the tide could rise
And the sky could fall

And come the time should I find myself
Caught up in the middle of it all
I wonder, who would I call?
Well I’m pretty good at some things
But then there’s all the rest
I know I look real independent
And I try to do my best
But sometimes…
I get so tired that I can’t face another step

AND I NEED ALL THE HELP THAT I CAN GET
All the help, that I can get
I need all the help that I can get

Communication
Ain’t it the key?
It takes just one guy to tell a lie
And a million willing souls believe
A pack of thieves herds the sheep

Now I can’t read the paper
I can’t watch my tv set
Seems like everywhere I look for light
The darker that it gets
Ruled by a government
Fuelled by gas and cigarettes
WE NEED ALL THE HELP THAT WE CAN GET
All the help, that we can get
We need all the help that we can get

Cuz the tide did rise
And the sky did fall
And a whole lotta folks found themselves
Right smack dab in the middle of it all
And it didn’t matter who they called (and called and called)
People, safety’s an illusion
You’re just one step from a wreck
Go ask those folks in New Orleans

The meaning of neglect

And don’t gamble with mother nature
Cuz you’re bound to lose that bet
WE NEED ALL THE HELP THAT WE CAN GET

Savasana

Lyrics & Music by Caren Armstrong, Copyright © 2007

Savasana Song

I feel so safe, wrapped in my anger
Just like a blanket, it keeps me warm
Indignation, justification
High up on the lonely mountain of my scorn

I have wandered, restless and hungry

And I have squandered all charity
Now I’m so empty, the table tempts me
But nothing I can eat will fill me up inside
I close my eyes and I

Inhale love, exhale forgiveness
Make it my business to live in peace
I keep on breathing, keep on believing
I will be free

A homeless man craps in an alley
A woman slaps her screaming child
And I’m left standing empty handed
Reaching in my pocket cannot reconcile

All the shame and anger
The darkness of the night
Such a sharp contrast to the light I find inside when I

Inhale love, exhale forgiveness
Make it my business to live in peace
I keep on breathing, keep on believing
I will be free

If I inhale love, exhale forgiveness
Make it my business to live in peace
No more defender
I SURRENDER

To the first thing and the last thing we will do here in this life

Inhale love, exhale forgiveness
Make it my business to live in peace
I keep on breathing, keep on believing
I will be free

Just Another Song

Lyrics & Music by Caren Armstrong, Copyright © 2007

Rosy skin
Juicy meat
The fruit forbidden is so sweet
But when it’s fallen to the ground
You are nowhere to be found
A coward’s harvest you will reap

Bushel baskets cold and deep
Frozen winter turns to spring
You’ll be Just Another Song I Used to Sing

Sit on that throne
Beneath that crown
Think you’re the only game in town
You feel so proud of all you’ve got
But you can’t have my body or my thoughts

I slam the door, I close my head
Mother, Daughter burned and bled
Holy Father, Hail to the King
That was Just Another Song I Used to Sing

I know what’s wrong
I know what’s right
I turn my spirit to the light
So keep your darkness keep your fear

You’ll find me shining over here
You are calling through that door
The one that I won’t open any more
I hear your cries diminishing
They sound like
Just another song I used to
Just another song I used to
Just Another Song I Used to Sing

I Light a Candle

Lyrics & Music by Caren Armstrong, Copyright © 2007

I Light a Candle

I am so empty
And so afraid
I light a candle

And I look at you and say
I know you love me
But you won’t let it show
Light a candle
After I go

I live alone now
And that feels fine
I light a candle

To the passing of the time
I know that one day
We will meet as friends
I light a candle
Until then

I light a candle for courage
I light a candle against the night
Oh darling

Light a candle for my life
For my life

I am with friends now
And life is sweet
I light a candle
Feel the earth beneath my feet
When I am lonely
I will think of you

And light a candle
In gratitude
I light a candle

What the Devil Won’t Do

Lyrics & Music by Caren Armstrong, Copyright © 2007

It’s got to be a dozen times
That I told you goodbye
But you just keep on buzzin’
Round my sugar like a fly
I offered up a banquet but you only took one bite
You got no room for me inside

You got your excuses
Solid as a rock

I got no more use for all your
Talk talk talk
So take that broken record off the gramophone
Do what the devil won’t do
Do what the devil won’t do
Do what the devil won’t do
And leave me alone

Even from a distance

You watch me like a hawk
Persistence is a virtue but baby wont you please
Stop sifting thru my business
With a fine tooth comb
Do what the devil won’t do
Do what the devil won’t do
Do what the devil won’t do
And leave me alone

Trouble, I’ve got trouble enough
Busted bubble
Had enough of your stuff
So be a good boy
And take your toys on home

Do what the devil won’t do
Do what the devil won’t do
Do what the devil won’t do

If I can’t get to heaven,
It’s because you and the devil
Won’t leave me alone

If That is Heaven

Lyrics & Music by Caren Armstrong, Copyright © 2007

Winter sky
Outside my window
Winter time inside my heart
I’ve been frozen in the darkness
Since the day we’ve been apart

Ever faithful
True companion
Never have I walked alone

Since the day you came to live here
Turned my heart into a home

And they tell me you’re an angel now
How God’s wings have set you free
Well tell Saint Peter If That is Heaven
Close the gates, don’t wait for me

When I’m empty
When I’m lonely

I close my eyes I call your name
Between the giving and the taking away
I will never be the same
I will never be the same

Everything

Lyrics & Music by Caren Armstrong, Copyright © 2007

May your road be smooth
And when it is not
May you always remember
The road is all you’ve got
Up and down, round the bend
To the top then back again
The question is the lesson
‘Cause when you know

That you don’t know
Then you know Everything

Now the days draw dark
As the year dies down
And the spring lies
Frozen in the fallow ground
Bide your time, mind the fire
No belief is required

The seasons teach the reason
That we cycle around
Again and again
Every ending a Beginning

And if things should fall apart
May Kindness be your finest work of art
May you dream
May you dwell

May you drink from the well
Drink from the Well of your Heart
May you Drink from the Well of Your Heart
